We are proud to be involved with the training and education of medical students and we are actively involved with training final year medical students from UCC. We have 4 students from UCC working on a 4 week rotation in our General Practice.
This works as a two way learning experience, as it provides the students with a valuable and practical insight into Primary care, while our doctors , through involvement with the students in tutorials and clinical audits, maintain and enhance their own knowledge. Each GP has a student sitting in with them for consultations, but patients are always given the opportunity to request a consultation with the doctor alone if they would prefer. However we do ask people to remember that the quality of the patient service provided by the health service going forward can only be maintained and improved by training, teaching, audits and research, all of which we facilitate by allowing students to participate in all aspects of general practice including consultations. We would like to reassure you that all members of staff including our students are governed by an ethic of privacy and confidentiality. Students participate in a range of activities during their general practice attachment with us including:
- Observation of consultations between GPs and their patients.
- Consultations with patients under the supervision of a GP
- Carrying out clinical procedures under supervision.
- Tutorials.
- Feedback/ report back sessions.
- Audit/ quality review project.
- Self-directed learning.
Learning to be a good doctor means spending time with patients and the health care professionals who work with them. We aim to provide our final year students with the opportunity to do this in a general practice setting, and we would like to thank all our patients who have assisted us with this.
