The GENIO Project:
A MAJOR COMMUNITY DEMENTIA INITIATIVE FOR KINSALE. Kinsale, and its surrounding hinterland, has just been selected as one of four areas nationally to participate in a three year pilot project aimed at improving services and supports to older people with dementia following a competitive selection process.
This project will work to identify, mobilise and develop community-based supports and innovative technological solutions with the ultimate aim of supporting carers and enabling people with dementia to remain at home living full lives. The findings of this project will inform the development of the forthcoming National Dementia Strategy.

The project nationally is being run by Genio, a pioneering non-profit organisation whose role is to bring people together to support social innovation. A quote from the Genio website is that "the solution to complex social and health issues cannot be found in a single organisation or person. It takes drive, commitment and collaboration".
Funds amounting to €4m have been committed to this project (€2m from Government and €2m from Atlantic Philanthropies).
Locally the K-CORD ( Kinsale COmmunity Response to Dementia ) consortium, which was successful in bringing the project to Kinsale, includes community organisations, technology experts, carers, church representatives, health professionals and HSE staff.
We are hosting a short briefing meeting in the Trident Hotel on Friday 9th March at 8pm and if you feel you or your organisation can help support people with dementia in our community, please contact Dr Tony Foley (4772253) or Dr Micheal Hynes (4772717) for further information.
